Alejandro Maldonado-Ramírez



I am a PhD student of the Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing Group at the CINVESTAV-Saltillo. Currently I’m working under supervision of Professor L. Abril Torres Méndez.
About me
I was born in Tampico, Mexico. I received my M.Sc. degree in Robotics and Advanced Manufacturing from the CINVESTAV Saltillo in 2014. I finished my undergraduate studies in Electronics Engineering in 2011 at the ITCM (in Spanish stands for Instituto Tecnológico de Ciudad Madero). Since January 2015 I am pursuing my PhD at CINVESTAV Saltillo.In general, I’m interested in bio-inspired methods that can help robots perform different task under real life conditions. I’m also interested in Machine Learning algorithms as well as Computer Vision.
 Current project
My current research project is about developing topological maps of underwater environments mainly using visual information. The main goal of the project is to build maps that can be understood and even modified by other robots and people navigating through the same place.
Previous projects
During my master’s degree I was working in autonomous exploration of underwater environments. The goal was to provide an autonomous underwater robot (AUV) with capabilities to explore an unknown environment, in particular a coral reef, in an autonomous manner. To deal with this problem, a visual attention algorithm to detect relevant regions in the underwater environments was implemented. The visual attention algorithm detect regions in an image that are likely to draw the attention of the human in terms of basic criteria such as color, orientation and motion. Once the most relevant region is detected, an AUV can navigate towards it. By doing this, an underwater robot can explore the coral reef by detecting a sequence of relevant regions.
